Mr. Apirak Kosayodhin, the fifteenth Governor of Bangkok, is recognized as one of the most outstanding, young, active executives in Thailand.
Born in Bangkok on 30 March 1961, Apirak did his high school education at one of the best schools in Bangkok, Triam Udomsuksa School. He gained a Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Technology from Chiang Mai University in 1983.
Owing to his eager interest in business administration, he continued his studies and had a Master of Business Administration in Marketing from the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) in Bangkok and a Certificate in Advanced Management Program from Harvard University in the United States of America respectively.
Starting his working life at Pizza Hut, he went on to become a Director of Sales and Marketing of Pepsi – Cola International, Southeast Asia. Because of his leadership and management skills, he was appointed the first Managing Director to start up and run Frito – Lay business, a subsidiary of PepsiCo Inc., in Thailand in 1994. He then joined GMM Grammy Public Company Limited, a leading media and entertainment conglomerate, as a President and Chief Executive Officer. In 2002, he took up a post as the Chief Executive Officer of TA Orange, one of the largest telecommunication firms in Thailand.
Mr. Apirak was not only a skilled executive in business, but he was also active in working with several public organizations.
He was the Governor of the Stock Exchange of Thailand and the President of the Marketing Association of Thailand in 2002.
He was also a councilor and a chairman of Marketing Management Group Committee of Thailand Management Association, a member of the Steering Committee for Promotion of Educational Standards and Quality Assurance of the Office of National Education Commission and a lecturer for MBA courses in many institutions.
Following his political will, Mr.Apirak resigned from his post at TA Orange in 2004 to run for the Governor of Bangkok as a candidate from Democrat Party. He structured his campaign around the theme “Our Bangkok”, with emphasis on public participation in city management and development. After being elected by more than 900 thousands of Bangkok eligible voters in August 2004, Mr. Apirak became the first Governor of Bangkok who came from the private sector while previous governors were civil officials, academics or politicians. In March 2005, he was elected Deputy Leader of the Democrat Party whose responsibility is directing the party’s activities in the Bangkok area. Apirak was reelected for his 2nd term as Bangkok Governor with nearly 1 million votes in October 2008.
Mr. Apirak has taken the new position of Advisor to the Priminister Abhisit Vejjajiva, setting Thailand strategy roadmap for the development of the nation.
Mr. Apirak is married to Mrs. Patima Kosayodhin, and they have a son, Anak Kosayodhin.
